Flow Measurement For Hydroelectric Power Plants

Penstock and turbine efficiency monitoring

Measuring the flow of water is an essential part of the plant instrumentation to evaluate performance, efficiency and ensure safe operation. The FLUXUS non-intrusive flow solution provides highly accurate and repeatable flow measurement for hydroelectric power plants.

  • Easy and cost-efficient installation
  • No pipe work and risk of leakage
  • Permanently stable, wear and tear-free measurement

Hydroelectric Power Generation is worldwide the most dominant renewable generation of electricity. It is one of the most important energy sources. One common way is to use the energetic potential. Water is dammed up and routed through penstocks to a lower level. A hydroelectric turbine is then driven by the water, which converting the energy of the flowing water into mechanical energy driving an electrical generator converting it to electricity.

Hydroelectric power plants often serve as a buffer or storage of electricity, then called pumped storage plant. If electricity is needed, the potential energy of the stored water can be transferred into power by feeding it through turbines. In case of an electricity surplus or low electricity price water can be pumped up again into a reservoir for later use.

The altitude difference of the dammed-up water and the hydroelectrical turbine is influencing the performance of the hydroelectric power plant (HPP). The flowing water can be considered as fuel and is key of the process. Measuring the flow of water is essential part of the plant instrumentation to evaluate performance, efficiency and ensure safe operation.
