Flow Measurements in a Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP)

Measurement is a prerequisite for controlling and regulating. All process parameters which are relevant to operational management must be continuously measured and fed into the process control system.
FLEXIM's non-invasive FLUXUS ultrasonic flowmeters are used for measuring flow rates in the combined heat and power plant of Frankfurt, Germany.
Originally, measuring orifices / differential pressure meters were used for flow measurement in the plant which dates back to the sixties.

The non-invasive, acoustic measurement has several decisive advantages over mechanical measurement technology. Unlike measurement using the differential pressure, clamp-on ultrasonic transducers do not cause any pressure loss inside the pipe and therefore do not reduce the efficiency of the plant as they are simply attached to the outer wall of the pipe.
At the same time, the modern measurement technology does not interfere with plant availability at any time because installation or any necessary maintenance work takes place during ongoing operation. Pipe work is not necessary. Finally, the non-inertial, acoustic measurement method shows excellent measuring dynamics while differential pressure meters only produce satisfactory accuracies in a limited range of operation.

Early test with a portable FLUXUS flow meter proved very satisfying for the CHP measurement experts, so that from 2002 onwards they purchased permanent FLUXUS flow meters, which are gradually replacing the existing differential pressure meters.
The non-invasive, ultrasonic FLUXUS flowmeters are also being used more and more in Frankfurt Airport's heating and cooling plant, which is also supported by the control technology maintenance department of the Frankfurt heat and power plant. Here, the FLUXUS meters are additionally measuring the thermal energy flow rates.
